The firm was founded in 1972 by Welles R. Guilmartin. Michael J. DiPiro became a partner in 1985 and Michael A. Sokolowski became a partner in 1994.  Teresa J. Opalacz was appointed a partner in 2010 after working as a consultant with the firm since 2001.  Welles retired from the firm in 2009 and is now serving as a consultant.
